Opportunity Information: Apply for PD 0001 FY2025
The U.S. Department of State is offering a grant opportunity titled "Security for Journalists Covering Organized Crime in Costa Rica." The goal of the project is to help Costa Rican journalists report more safely and effectively on crimes related to organized criminal networks and drug trafficking, including environmental, property, and violent crimes that often go unreported due to fear.
The selected nonprofit organization will: - Train at least 40 journalists in safe crime reporting practices - Provide protective gear and secure communication tools - Host at least 10 joint workshops and events with municipal police and Costa Rica’s Judicial Police (OIJ) to improve trust and information sharing - Strengthen networks of journalists, especially in rural and coastal areas - Promote understanding of U.S. efforts to protect journalists reporting on crime
The initial project period is up to 12 months, but there is potential for continuation based on funding, progress, and U.S. Department of State priorities. Applicants must be not-for-profit organizations, think tanks, civil society groups, non-governmental organizations, or individuals. Organizations must be registered in SAM.gov; individuals do not require this registration.
This opportunity aims not only to improve journalist safety but also to encourage more robust, sophisticated reporting in areas traditionally silenced by fear, ultimately contributing to a safer hemisphere.Apply for PD 0001 FY2025
